Emma-Jean is an odd sort of seventh grader – she is very smart, but prefers to observe her classmates rather than befriend them. She likes to look at things rationally and does not seem to care what people think of her. Colleen, another seventh-grader, is just the opposite. She cares too much what people think of her and is always working hard to make sure that her classmates like her. These two very different characters’ lives intertwine when Emma-Jean decides to use her ultra-logical problem solving skills to help Colleen deal with a social situation. Because this seems successful, Emma-Jean begins helping other people but the effect she is really having on their lives is not immediately apparent. Told in two different voices of seventh-grade girls, this is a wonderful story of life and friendship in middle school. Both boys and girls, young and old, will enjoy this pleasing novel. It makes an especially good read-aloud book for 5th and 6th graders.

Holes is about a boy whose under a curse. If it weren’t for the curse Stanley wouldn’t be at a boy’s detention camp where he digs holes 5 feet deep and 5 feet wide. I would recommend this book to other kids because the book starts out as a curse and ends different than you think. This is the best book in the world. I like it because it has a story you can’t stop reading.

There was a wife, a husband, and two children. The children’s names were Hansel and Gretel. They only had crumbs when they were left on their own and they fell asleep on an oak tree. Then they came to a bread house and old, little woman made food for them. Now she said, “I’ll fatten him and feed him meals.” For she wanted him to grow plump so she could eat him.

Little Bunny Foo Foo was always up to no good. He would bop people on the head and throw pie their faces. The setting was outside in the fresh air. He played tricks on his friends and not his friends. They didn’t want to be his friends anymore. He caught them and this didn’t please the fairy at all. She gave him three chances, but if he didn’t behave she would turn him into a goon. The fairy was very very big. She had a wand with string on it.

Do you remember all those classic childhood games you used to play? Does Kick the Can come to mind? How about the card game Spoons? Maybe you can’t remember the lyrics to “Pat-a-Cake” or the rules to Capture the Flag. Local author, Kirsten Denney, has published a book, The Orange Mama Laid, that is exactly what all parents and caregivers need to keep children under the age of 10 entertained. Lyrics to many songs and rhymes, as well as all the motions, are included, campfire games, card games, tag games, car games, races and many other activities are explained. It is a well-organized book that will bring back the best memories of childhood.
The Norwalk Public Library will soon have this book on their shelves, so keep an eye out for it.

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH

One of my favorite books of all time is Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O’Brien. It is about a colony of very smart rats – so smart that they can read and write. And when you can read, you can do just about anything, so these rats have managed to build their own civilization complete with libraries and machines. When Mrs. Frisby, a widowed mouse living close by, asks the rats of NIMH for help moving their summer house out of danger, the rats must come up with a brilliant solution to help her. Will they manage?
